Back to School

August 19, 2008, 5:14 pm by Shannon Shorr
Appropriately, as I've started to write this entry, I'm listening to The Deftones' "Back to School (Mini Maggit)". Since I posted five days ago not much has been going on. I've been to the aforementioned 'The Houndstooth' all 4 nights since its re-opening the other night. Can't get enough of it. We've had some pretty fun nights up there.

Class starts back here at The University of Alabama tomorrow. I'm excited. I have 16 hours of classes, but I don't really expect to be THAT challenged by the business management curriculum. Hope to do well. I've told myself if I drop my classes this time then I won't come back again, so here's to hoping I finish.

I played the online poker tournaments Saturday and Sunday. Saturday I kind of blanked. Sunday I had like four cashes, but I don't think it was enough to turn profit despite finishing somewhere in the 100s in the Sunday Million, 33rd in the 100r, and cashing in the FTOPS bounty event. I was proud, for the most part, of how patiently I played on Sunday. It's something that I've struggled with in the past playing online MTTs. For whatever reason, I'm extremely patient and focused when I play live tournaments but I always get distracted by phone calls, TV, music, etc when I play online. Whatever. Still obv turning profit over the lil bit of time I put in online. Congrats to Mike Katz for finishing 2nd in the PS 500 on Sunday for a cool 70 dimes.

More updates soon. Thanks for reading.

Tuscaloosa, Online MTT, Dentist, etc.

August 14, 2008, 4:56 pm by Shannon Shorr
Sorry for 6 days between posts. I last left off as I was headed to Nashville to hang out with my friend Katherine. I had a really fantastic time. We ate at some really cool eateries, went to some kick ass bars, heard some great live music and landed awesome 6th row seats in the end zone at the Titans game. The Titans won easily against the Rams like 34-13. I will go so far as to say Nashville is the city with the best bar scene (not to be confused with nightclub scene) that I've experienced. I expect that will change though when I go to Austin next month.

I got back into Birmingham in time to play the last few tournaments online on Sunday without any success. I played the full slate of tournaments Tuesday and Wednesday online without any significant success. A finish somewhere in the fifties of the like 1200 entrants in last nights PokerStars nightly was the only thing noteworthy at all. There's a possibility my plans will change and I'll be able to play the 2500 dollar FTOPS on Saturday, but I'll certainly play the 500 dollar FTOPS main event on Sunday.

The only other thing that's been going on with me in the last week was a couple trips to the dentist. Yesterday I went in for a cleaning and today I actually had the Zoom! laser whitening treatment which was a little painful at times but worth it. The teeth are a few shades whiter. They're making me these molds that I can use to get them even whiter.

I wish I had more for to blog about. School starts next Wednesday. The world-famous Tuscaloosa bar 'The Houndstooth' re-opens tonight. It has been completely rebuilt with a second floor now. I'm amped. A few of us are going out there tonight (and probably tomorrow too). If anyone sees me please say hi. In the few days I've spent in Tuscaloosa since I've gotten back I've already met some really cool people. There was a period of time when I was playing poker and traveling the circuit that I absolutely had no interest in meeting new people because I was so turned off by the personalities of most of the scum, degenerates, and cheaters I'd met at the tables. That isn't the case anymore.

Interview, Golf, Nashville, Poker, Olympics, etc

August 8, 2008, 12:45 pm by Shannon Shorr
The last few days I've been in Birmingham. I've really struggled to get off this silly sleeping schedule. For like 6 nights I couldn't get to sleep before 6 a.m. in the morning and didn't awake until atleast 3 p.m., lol. This doesn't work well with the real world business schedule, I've learned. I got in at like 4 a.m. last night, but I forced myself to get up at 11 a.m. this morning. Hopefully I can get back to something that's semi-normal because that schedule makes me feel worthless.

I did an interview earlier this week with Bernard Lee (of 2005 WSOP ME fame). I'd previously done an interview with Bernard back in February that I really enjoyed. I think this one came out well too. BL is a brilliant guy and is fun to chat with. If anyone is interested in listening to the interview you can do so for free by going to the iTunes store and downloading the podcast. To find it, type "Bernard Lee" in the search box. You should then see a podcast called Rounders Radio. Click on that title. You'll then see a list of the radio shows and should see the one with my name on it. Click "get episode". If anyone has any trouble finding it email me and I'll try to help you out.

The other day my Dad and I had a chance to get out to the golf course at Altadena Valley in Birmingham. Had a really nice time even though I was really spraying all my shots and in general hacking around. It was pretty much to be expected after not playing for four months. I'm gonna try to play a lot of golf this semester since I have such late classes. I think it would be a fun hobby and I wouldn't mind getting really good at it. I'm not too realistic about getting too good though.

Last night some of my boys and I went out to the ever-exciting Thirsty Thursday at the minor league baseball Birmingham Barons game. Dollar beers. Had a really good time and followed with a trip to this joint called Fox and the Hound in Birmingham that was pretty cool.

Later today I'm headed up to Nashville to chill with an old friend of mine that now lives there. I'm excited about it. Tomorrow we're going to the Tennessee Titans vs. St. Louis Rams preseason game. Can't wait! I went to the Music City Bowl at The Coliseum (now named L.P. Field) a few years ago for the Bama vs. Minnesota game and really enjoyed it. It's a fun place to watch a game. I didn't realize it until I pulled up the rosters a few minutes ago, but U of Alabama standout WR Matt Caddell actually signed with St. Louis after going undrafted in 2008, so hopefully he'll see some playing time. Wow it's almost football season...yesssssssssssssssssssssssss.

I did play poker for the first time in a while the other night. I decided to play the FTOPS event #1. I busted in the last minutes of the first hour. I played a few others and turned a lil profit when I actually final tabled the, like, 130 player 1000 dollar tournament on the ever-sketchy Absolute poker. First was like 33000 but I finished 7th for like 4 dimes. It was a real who's who of online MTT stars at the final table, so I was excited for the opportunity to watch and learn some things from them that I'll try to implement in my online MTT game. I might play a few of the FTOPS events online next week but will skip the tournaments again this Sunday. I really would like to play the 2500 dollar FTOPS event next Saturday, but I have prior engagements and will probably have to miss it.

In others news I've been eating really healthy this week. I also stayed away from alcohol for a week...until last night. Weeeeeeeeeeeee. I haven't made it back to Tuscaloosa yet to look into buying a condo. I have been doing a lil research online though, and I think there is some nice value down there. I'll probably look around next week when I have a chance to head back down there. Oh, also I'm really excited that the Olympics kick off tonight. It's always fun seeing the stories that come out of the Games.

That's all I got for ya.

Scheduled Classes

August 4, 2008, 3:27 am by Shannon Shorr
So, it's about 3:30 a.m. on Monday morning. I have been on a ridiculously crazy sleep schedule the last four days, so all the days are kind of running together. I'm glad to be able to sleep in my perfect tempurpedic bed though with the nice super blackout curtains in my room. Best sleep ever.

The last few days not too much has been going on. I did get all of my classes scheduled. I'll be taking a decent size load of 16 hours. My classes will be American Literature, Legal Studies, Statistics, Accounting, and some Microcomputer Applications course. I'm actually excited to get back into the classroom. Classes begin on August 20, so I still have some time to relax. I got really lucky and was able to pick up what seem to be mostly good professors (per ratemyprofessor.com) despite being so late to register. I'll be taking a bunch of evening classes from like 4 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. a couple of the nights. This is pretty cool and fine with me because I can sleep late after long nights out :) I have one afternoon class that starts at like 11:30 a.m., but that's my earliest one and only one day out of the week. I also have zero Friday classes which is the nutttttttttt. I can sneak off for some long weekends. I'll update more about school as it approaches.

I came back to Birmingham yesterday to hang out with my mom and sister, Heather and to help her with some things around her house. Tonight we got some dinner and went to see Dark Knight again. My life is so perfect right now. It's so nice to spend time with family. It's so relaxing and so rewarding. I plan on making up for all of the lost time that I missed while I was in Vegas. One of my other priorities right now is to get into really good shape. I came close this summer in Vegas but alas the WSOP began and it became impossible to get to the gym. I'm back to like 214 lbs but think I can get down to like 202 or 203 in the next few weeks. I'm gonna eat really well starting tomorrow and do my best to abstain from alcohol next week. My body needs cleansing so badly.

Let's see what else. I think I'ma drive back down to Tuscaloosa in a few hours. I'm almost certainly going to buy a condo in Tuscaloosa and then shouldn't have much of a problem leasing out my apartment for the remaining 11 months. Sadly, we had to sign a new lease in like April to make sure they didn't take the apartment out from under us. The lease just started on August 1st.

I haven't played any real poker in what seems like a long time now. I totally skipped the Sunday tournaments today. I think I could easily not play any poker at all, esp NLHE, for quite some time and not really miss it. I hope I don't lose many blog readers. I'll still try to include some poker (or atleast gambling) content every now and then.

Not too much else is going on. I've compiled a long to do list of things I'ma try to do this week. I was planning on hiring an assistant or something, but I think there is something to be said about doing a lot of this pointless lil stuff by myself. It's so much easier paying someone negligible amounts of money to do it, but it will be a large leap in the right direction in helping me not be so lazy and worthless :)

Thanks for reading guys.

Quick update from Tuscaloooooooooooosa

August 1, 2008, 3:57 am by Shannon Shorr
So I am back in Alabama. Ima show up with a better update tmw. Since I last posted I won six figures flipping on FTP in plo8 which is a small miracle. I was stuck a dangerously high figure at one point, so it's clutch I even pulled to break even, but then when I turned profit I had to exploit my edge in flips, heh. Am lucky to have really, really good credit and get some online loans from my boiz TopTizzlePizzle and Lolina and FTOPS winners mattyv and CrazyZachary to keep me in action :) Ima cash out tomorrow, put 50 perc down on a surprisingly inexpensive Tuscaloosa condo or buy a luxury car or something and quit everyone a winner and never flip for that kinda money again :) Got my boy Jon Little (one of if not THE most dangerous player in WPT history <3) to change my FTP password, so I can't do anymore debauchery. Had a good time w/ tha rail and had lots of support. Did triviaaaaaaa and made some railbirds rich bishes. Thanks sports. Feels so wrong but oh so right to be back on a college campus again. Miss it so bad.

Will show up w/ more tomorrow.

Summer Recap

July 29, 2008, 5:25 am by Shannon Shorr
As I start this blog, it's about 1:35 a.m. Tuesday morning. Quickly, I've played a lil Omaha 8 the last couple of nights, but obviously the freeroll is over because the WSOP is over. My inbox has been flooded, so I won't take the time to respond to those emails.

I apologize for not blogging for the last 8 days. I've been hangin' out with the coolest gals ever Lacey Jones and Esther "Etay" Taylor the last week and in general doing nothing productive. It's been a fun week since I last posted. Did some bowling a couple times, saw Dark Knight and Stepbrothers, made a trip to Stoney's, degen'd a lil bit, went to the USA vs Canada basketball game, watched the sick, sick, sick Margarito fight on PPV, etc. I like to think I deserved a week off :)

I have a flight back to Birmingham in about 6 hours. All the roomies have departed besides basebaldy who bought a house here, so I'll be the last one to head out. The last four months have been just perfect. I arrived out here on March 27, and the time has just flown by. I've had this feeling of "leaving" Las Vegas one night each of the last 3 summers, and all three times I get kinda sad thinking about all the fun that my roommates and I had. I would go to war with all 5 of the guys. I could easily compile a list of 50 kick ass stories that we all shared from the summer.

The trip started out pretty nicely for me. I'd been doing well online leading up to April, and I think it gave me an extra bit of confidence. I final tabled two of the early preliminary events at the Five Star series but sadly finished with two seventh places for relatively insignificant money. A little later in the series I made a nice third final table of the series in a 5000 dollar event. I ended up getting three handed with Bruno Fitoussi and Michael Binger before busting in third for something like 95000 dollars, which helped turn the series around. A few days later I had a chance to really make some noise in the last prelim (5000 dollar) at Bellagio but finished just short of the 18 paying spots and another final table. I satellited into the subsequent 25000 dollar WPT Championship event for somewhere in the neighborhood of 9000 dollars, I think. Things went really poorly all day 1, and I limped through before busting pretty early on in day 2.

We played a little more poker in April. I think I played two preliminary events and then the 5000 dollar WSOPC main event at Caesar's but busted out of all of them.

The month of May was more or less a vacation for my roommates and me. I flew home in early May to attend this really cool Crawfish Boil festival in Birmingham that I always enjoy. Did the Cinco de Mayo thing, relaxed for a couple days, and then flew to London with Mike and Adam to vacation. We spent a few days there and then headed over to Amsterdam for a few days that I don't really remember.

We made it back to Vegas and I was lucky to have my sister in town for a week on business. Had a really good time with her before the roomies and I all left on a 4 day houseboat trip. We did this houseboat trip last year and it's just a blast! I hope we can make it an annual thing.

We arrived back at the house in Vegas the day before the 2008 WSOP began. I remember thinking that I could not believe how it had already been a year since the previous WSOP (and my infamous balcony leap). I played the first 5 events and kind of got unlucky in a few of them to start out 0 for 5. Although I don't put stock in a ridiculously small sample size of five 5 tournaments, I was already getting worried about starting out like 0 for 12 like I did in the 2006 WSOP. It can easily happen, but its painful when it happens on such a big stage.

Alas, things would change for the much, much better. In my sixth tournament, event #7, I made a magical run through some 1600 entrants to finish in 2nd place to a gentleman named Matt Keikoan. It was some of the most fun I'd ever, ever had playing poker. It hurt so bad to come so close to a bracelet and miss, but my time will come.

I think I airballed my next 5 tournaments before heading out to Minneapolis to attend my friend Dave Anderson's wedding. Had a really sick time there and met some cool people, but at the same time I was excited to get back to Vegas a few days later to take more shots at bracelets. I'd have another chance soon after my return. I made a run in the 2500 dollar shorthanded NLHE event, finishing 32nd or something. This was a tournament that I will never, ever forget. I was involved in 7 "coinflips" over the course of the tournament and won all 7 of them. Sadly, like four of these were early on and were relatively insignificant aside from once or twice keeping me in the tournament.

I went on a decent little heater to end the preliminary events. For the first time in my career I cashed in a non-NLHE event. It came in the form of a 1500 dollar PLO H/L event. I had a well media-documented suckout on the bubble against Layne Flack where he showed me middle set and the nut flush draw against my had-to-call Kx6s4s2x on Ks9x2s that propelled me to second in chips to end day 1. I really, really enjoyed that tournament. I was a little below average and actually could've very easily contended for the bracelet, but I lost a virtual coinflip for all the chips to bust in 25th place. On day 2 I had the chance to play with Erik Seidel, which I really enjoyed. Erik is one of the guys I admire most in the industry, and he's someone whom I've tried to model my career after.

My final cash came in the prestigious 5000 dollar shorthanded event. I'm not much one for talking strategy, but I really was happy with how I played these shorthanded events. I just sort of sat back and trapped all tournament long without playing too, too fast. I know a lot of the young guys go out there and want to raise every hand, which is fine, but this was a style that worked nicely for me in the 6man tournies. I battled my ass off in this one and was able to hang on long enough to finish like 30th place for around 20 thousand dollars.

We took a few days off and then played the WSOP Main Event. I cashed in the 2006 ME but have since struggled, busting on day 1 each of the last two years. This year I kind of just struggled to get anything going all day. I did start to rally in the final level and got to my highpoint of 27000 but then got in an insane 3 way AI with 10 minutes left in the night with K9dd vs 76dd vs 4c4s on 9s5d4d and missed my few outs.

There was still quite a bit of poker to be played after the series. Our new daily destination was Bellagio for the few prelims leading up to the 15000 dollar WPT Bellagio Cup. Things went pretty remarkably for me at what is kind of my home casino. Things worked themselves out and I picked up my first career outright win against this Frenchman to capture the 3000 dollar event for one quarter of a million dollars. A few days later I had a chance to win back to back tournaments as I found myself at the final table of a 5000 dollar tournament. It wasn't to be though as I finished 3rd for 125000 more dollars. The bustout hand stung for a while. Three handed there was a really nitty British gentleman who was on the felt a lil bit with 400000 chips and blinds 15/30000. I had about 1.3 million and Jimmy Fricke had 1.8 or something. It was folded to me in the SB, and I decided to complete AKo. I had been completing everytime when the nit folded the button, and I felt Jimmy must've felt it was time for a raise out of the BB. To my delight Jimmy raised it 100000 more to 130000. I thought and raised to 430000 and then Jimmy thought and moved me in. I quickly called, he showed KQss, the door was a Q, and I never caught up.

Jimmy played the hand fine, and it is what it is.

I remember a bunch of people being kind of shocked when I didn't really react or bitch about the hand. The truth is I couldn't complain or bemoan my luck. I'd gotten really, really lucky in the tournament before when I spiked a two outter 8 handed for all my chips. I get so, so tired of hearing people complain about beats and seemingly forget about when they spike. There are like a dozen guys on the tournament circuit that I will purposely avoid on the breaks because I know all I'm going to hear from them is bad beat stories. No one runs worse than anyone else in the longterm, and it's just dumb to sweat the day to day or hand to hand grind. I kind of realized this maybe 9 months ago, and it's so fucking liberating. I can just play poker, make good decisions, and live with the results. I remember as recently as late last year going back to my hotel room and throwing shit and whining to my then-girlfriend Stephanie. It was a rough time then, but still I can now look back on that and realize how childish it was.

I played a few more tournaments in the form of the Bellagio WPT, The Venetian 5000, and The Orleans 2000 but bricked all three to end the summer.

In three weeks I will be returning to The University of Alabama to take a semester of undergrad business management classes in hopes of getting closer to finishing my degree. It will be the hardest thing I've ever done, especially coming off a summer like this where I turned as much profit as I likely would over the course of the majority of my lifetime simply using the business degree. As I said last January when I was returning though, it's not about the money. A friend told me tonight, "Shannon, you might be the first poker player to ever drop out of school, make it and then go back to school." I thought this was funny and true. For me now, it's about getting the experience, diversifying my life, and meeting new people. This game of poker has played such a huge part of my life over the last 30 months or so, and I'm ready for it to take kind of a back seat to some other interests and activities I hope to pursue. You won't find me grinding cash online, playing nightly tournaments, or anything like that for the next few months. I probably will play a few of the FTOPS and WCOOP events. I've won a seat to the Aruba tournament, so I'll almost certainly go there, and depending on how I get my last few classes scheduled I may be able to sneak away to a couple WPTs like Borgata without missing much class.

One more thing I'd like to touch on is Las Vegas as a whole. Vegas is a city I hate to love and love to hate. Everything is so damn fake here it seems. There's almost zero chance of meeting women unless you're fortunate enough to do so somewhere like a dance floor at a nightclub. Everything, too, is about the pursuit of money. I'm looking forward to getting back to Alabama, meeting some real people, and being able to just hang out with friends and stuff.

All of this said though, I still cannot get enough of Vegas. When I'm back in Alabama I often find myself missing it. I guess it's a double edge sword. I love the action, the lights, the 24/7 lifestyle, everything about it. We talked about buying a condo out here, but I think we're gonna wait. It makes sense as I see myself being out here atleast a few months per year every year.

In closing, thanks for everyone who's been a special part of this wild ride. I've met so many interesting people, have so many stories, and have been afforded unbelievable opportunities thanks to this game.

The only thing that I really hate is that I won't be able to compete for the Player of the Year title this year. After 2006, I thought it would take a long, long time to get this close again. As it stands now, I am in seventh place but really within one big score of taking over the lead, so if I can do something in one of the few tournies I'll play the rest of the calendar year it could happen. You won't find me rooting, atleast publicly :) against the other guys in the race as I did in 2006, lol. I look back on that and think it was really immature of me.

Hopefully school will be a nice experience for me.

I'll have some updates this week when I get back to Bama. If you read all of this I really, really appreciate it. I also hope to return all of your emails in the next week or so. Wow this was long and took 2 hours.

Out on bubble of Orleans 2000

July 20, 2008, 11:50 pm by Shannon Shorr
Sigh. Out in 10th with 9 paying of the 64 entrants in the Orleans Casino's 2000 dollar main event. So sick I was chipleader with 3x average when I took the dinner break with Ben Fineman, but I managed to run into two ridiculous coolers against Sabyl Landrum. The first I doubled her with Q9 vs her AQ on KTxJ. Then I completed the SB with AKss at 1500/3000, she checked, I bet 5000 on KJ6 two clubs, she raised to 15000, I moved in, and she called with J6 and I couldn't catch up. I'm not taking anything away from Sabyl though. She played very tough all day, held over me, and is one of the toughest female NLHE tournament players I've played with. It isn't the first and won't be the last time I'll bubble. I've played enough tournament poker that I've got to the point that it only stings for the car ride home. Still, it's the absolute last tournament of the summer, and I JUST missed a few more POY points. Fourth would've slid me one spot ahead of Erick Lindgren to land me back up to sixth. Oh well. I've been awake 24 hours and it's time to sleep. Mike, Adam and I are probably going to buy a 3BR condo out here, so we'll go look at some tmw.

Updates Still to Come

July 17, 2008, 7:03 am by Shannon Shorr
All the days running together lately. Sleeping a lot. Going to a lot of NBA summer league games. Watched sickest ever MLB all star game. Miss my family. Miss tha south. Adam finished 13rd in Bellagio Cup. I'll have a lot of my thoughts on life, Vegas, school, etc sometime in the next 24 hours. Thanks for your patience. For whatever reason my blog hits are at an all-time high. I hope to reward you guys with some good stuff. Just got back from Blue Martini, so now is not the time.

Good luck to people I'm fond of, Luke Staudenmaier and John Phan (who is amidst arguably one of the best poker tournament runs of all-time) at the final table of the Bellagio Cup tomorrow. I also wouldn't mind seeing this kid Mike Watson win, as he appears like a real class act from his interviews.

Update

July 14, 2008, 10:17 am by Shannon Shorr
I busted from the Venetian main event very early in a memorable pot. I'll detail it tmw maybe. Later, I went to Bank with my boy Nate Hays and his bro Chris. Then by pure accident I ended up in what was probably a tough 1/200 LHE live game at Bellagio where I had a really good time and managed to turn a 5 big bet profit somehow, lol.

The summer is over now. I'll try to post a summer wrap up post that will be good for, if nothing else, mental masturbation. It was truly magical.

Out of WPT Bellagio Cup

July 12, 2008, 11:20 pm by Shannon Shorr
Out of the 15000 dollar main event. I'm sick so I won't say much. The day could not have gone worse. I missed so many flops in multiway limped and raised pots that I wanted to puke. Amazingly, I had a chance to be right back at average and in the hunt if my hand holds on the penultimate hand of the night. I was at a starting table with JC Tran to my direct right and Tony Gargano, Chris Bush and Allen Kessler to my left in that order. Also at the table was this dude I think named Rob that plays decent. There was one mega, mega, mega Euro fish in the 1 seat who made a habit out of limp/calling like half of the hands. JC or I would exploit his limp just about everytime, but I managed to miss the flop all day long, fire on bullet on the flop each time then give up and his third pair would be good at showdown. Well, after entering every pot with this guy all day long I finally got my chance to double through him (although his play is standard on this hand).

We drew 5 more hands left in the night at the fifteen minute mark. This hand was slated to be the next to last for our table. Megafish open limps 600 and JC limps behind him in EP. I finally find AcAd and raise to 3000. Folds back to Mega and he calls. JC folds. Flop 975 two spades. Mega checks I bet 6000 into 8000ish letting him know I was going to go with my final 17000. He jammed and I quickly called. He showed me KTss. Turn Qd giving him 3 more outs. River Qs. If I hold there I'm back to 55000 after being as low as 9000, but it is what it is.

There is one more poker tournament I'll be playing this summer. It will be a 5000 dollar affair tomorrow at Venetian. I am going to relax.
